Amazon had previously announced their intent to begin operations in South Africa in October 2023, and as of 7 May 2024 it has officially launched its South African contingent of business.

This marks an exciting milestone in the advancement of e-commerce in not only South Africa but Southern Africa as a whole, as it opens the doors to many other countries such as Nigeria which Amazon has already implied is a likely expansion opportunity.

Amazon is an economic giant in both e-commerce and general business terms, with a total of $1.105 trillion in value and a brand value of $350 billion. Therefore, the introduction of them into the South African business landscape brings interesting and exciting prospects for South African businesses and emerging professionals.
